Celebrating Culture, Community, and the Joy of Dance
There’s something magical about watching a group of dancers bring a piece of their culture to life. It’s even more incredible when you see the love and joy they pour into every step, every turn, and every smile. For me, dance has always been an enigma—no matter how much I try, my feet simply refuse to “caer en tiempo.” My coordination seems to have taken a permanent vacation. It’s like trying to remember the words to my favorite song, but they always slip away. Yet, watching others dance so effortlessly and beautifully fills my heart in a way I can’t describe.
This next group I’ve come to know embodies that beauty. They perform breathtaking folkloric dances from Colombia, and their passion radiates with every move. They don’t just dance as individuals—they practice as a team, lifting each other up and helping one another prepare, from perfecting steps to fixing costumes and makeup. The pride they take in dancing together is truly heartwarming, like a family away from their families.
This group is a beautiful mix of friends and relatives who have become an inseparable family. They came together with a shared desire to bring the joy of their music and traditions to the community, sharing a piece of home with all of us. The colors of their costumes alone are enough to make me smile—the vibrant reds, blues, and yellows swaying in unison to the rhythm of the music. And the music! It’s a connection that’s hard to put into words.
For me, music is more than a backdrop to life; it’s a source of peace and energy. It’s what gets me through my Saturday morning cleaning routine, lifting my spirits with salsa, bachata, or una cumbia. Music binds me back to the island and reminds me of where I come from. I can't wait to watch this group perform, with their passion and connection to the music — a reminder of how art can transcend borders and connect us all.
Their dances remind us of the beauty of culture, community, and the power of music to bring people together. It’s a joy to witness their pride and dedication, and it’s a reminder that even if my feet will never follow the beat, my heart will always find it.
