Finding Strength in Adaptation and Stories of Empowerment
The day began at the Manchester campus, a location that held the promise of a meaningful backdrop for the next participant in my photography project. As we approached the main building, an unexpected connection unfolded—one of those moments where the world feels a little smaller. Recognized from a shared time at the University of Saint Joseph, the realization brought an instant sense of familiarity and ease to the encounter.
However, plans don’t always unfold as expected. Despite confirming access to the building, the campus was closed. In moments like these, flexibility becomes key. The setback didn’t deter us; instead, it created an opportunity to adapt. A nearby coffee shop became our new setting, a cozy space where stories could still be shared and connections deepened.
One of the joys of this project is asking participants to select locations that hold meaning for them. These settings often enrich the storytelling process, offering an additional layer to the portrait. Yet, days like this remind me that it’s not always about the location—it’s about the people and their stories. Challenges like this one add to the journey, shaping both the experience and the photographs that come from it.
As we sat together, the conversation unfolded. Hearing another’s journey is always a gift, and this story was no exception. The work being done to support women and empower them to transform their circumstances spoke volumes about resilience and determination. Listening to this mission reminded me of the broader purpose of my project: to celebrate strength, culture, and the power of shared experiences.
The day didn’t go exactly as planned, but that’s the beauty of it. Challenges can be overcome, and when they are, they leave behind something richer and more meaningful. The portraits captured today will carry that story forward—a testament to resilience and the connection between people, no matter where they gather.
